If you’re a tradie and like the overall dimensions, looks, and capabilities of a true working vehicle, but also like a bit of refinement, the Holden Colorado is a good choice.
Yes, it is big and solid, but handles quite well, and despite its suspension being tuned for hard work and off-road driving, it provides adequate/reasonable passenger comfort.
On the road, there’s no masking the relatively loud diesel engine, there’s also a fair bit of wind noise that permeates into the cabin.
As with all the big utes/pick-ups available today parking is quite challenging due to the high seating position and hefty proportions.
There’s no doubting the dynamic improvements over the previous version have made for a more comfortable, and more forgiving feel, the trade-off is a somewhat bouncy and sort jittery feel on the asphalt and dirt.
Under the bonnet, right across the Colorado range, is a 2.8 litre ‘Duramax’ turbo-diesel engine that is a better than adequate performer.
There’s six-speed manual and six-speed auto variants available, 2WD and 4WD, as well as two-door, extended cab (with two little doors that open front to rear), and the popular dual-cab versions.
On the inside, much like the driving characteristics, Holden also soften things up with a view to making the Colorado cabin a more enjoyable and comfortable place to be.
Storage areas are generally well-sized and there is ample leg and head room front and rear.
Safety is covered by a full five-star ANCAP safety rating (details here).
People keep saying that Australian car buyers will eventually grow bored with this type of vehicle, however the sales numbers don’t suggest that’s anywhere near a reality.
Holden sales have been disappointing this year so your local dealer might be keen to talk a good deal! And Holden’s new seven-year warranty (available until the end of the year) could also help to put it just ahead of its competitors.
