It’s baffling that the Ford Focus isn’t a bigger seller amongst Australian consumers than it is considering the car’s performance and list of features.

The big three (Corolla, i30, Mazda3) topped the sales figures for 2016 as usual but the Focus came in way down the list even behind the likes of the Holden Cruze and Mitsubishi Lancer.

Under scrutiny is the range topping Ford Focus Titanium hatchback which for $32,690 comes with:

  • An 8” touch screen with Ford SYNC 3, sat nav, DAB+, Apple CarPlay/Andriod Auto
  • Adaptive cruise control and speed limiter
  • Park assist and auto start/stop
  • Safety aids - lane departure, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert
  • Dual climate control
  • Auto wipers and headlights, DRLs, washers
  • Front and rear sensors, rear view camera
  • Leather trim seats with powered driver’s seat
  • And…smart keyless entry, push button ignition

As you can see the top spec Titanium is a comprehensive package topped off with a decent drive.

An entirely different kettle of fish from the Ford Focus RS we looked at recently, the Focus Titanium is of course more comfortable than the hard suspension of the sporty model and while not untamed is still pretty lively.

Most cars now have a sport mode selection anyway for that little bit more oomph.

For a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine the Ford Focus did consume 10L/100km which is higher than estimated.

It’s one of those cars that is easy to drive with light steering, compliant suspension and appropriate driver assistance technology.

The cabin may not have the refinement of the other top models out there but it is not outdated, though the angular dash which juts out quite far may not appeal to everyone.

As a new parent, the one thing I noticed it doesn’t have is ISOFIX anchors which is surprising given the amount of other inclusions and how common they are nowadays.

A couple of other curiosities worth noting are the cabin light switch mounted above the driver’s head and the double handles on the inside of the boot making it much more convenient when closing.

So all round a satisfactory offering for the small car buyer with everything the average person would need and that should be receiving much more attention.
