2017 BMW 7 Series Road Test and Review…

It was a delight to get about town in the flagship version of the BMW 7 Series - the 750Li.

A pleasure, but also a little nerve-wracking given the price tag - a cool $319,000!

But, I can assure you that you could ferry the Queen or the richest Sultan around town in the big BMW and they wouldn’t be able to complain about any lack of features, quality or comfort.

My only real compliant with the BMW 750Li is that it didn’t come with a shower, washing machine, or microwave - heaven knows it has everything else you could ever possible want!

A wine chiller, TV’s, electric and heated rear seats, and an iPod rear control system being just some of the luxuries.

The leather seats are superb, even for the people “slumming it” up front.

Those seats also have a terrific massage function that really gets in and kneads away at your back, neck and umm…other places.

Leg room, front and back, well its absolutely huge and the gesture control function to complete tasks such as turning the radio up and down is a real glimpse of the future.

One area of slight concern though, the wine chiller does take up some boot space.

What’s it like to drive? Well it certainly is an experience.

BMW builds its cars a little bit like Airbus builds planes - i.e. if you can fly an a320, you won’t have too much trouble taking the controls of the a380.

So the cabin isn’t very much different to the smaller BMW’s and that is no bad thing.

The overall length of the 750Li is definitely something you are conscious of, especially when parking, however the surround view camera system certainly is a big help.

The other thing is the weight - we’re talking over 1.8 tonnes here and it feels it when you take your foot off the accelerator, it doesn’t roll on as well as smaller and lighter cars.

But don’t worry, just squeeze the accelerator and the silky-smooth 330kW/650Nm BMW V8 engine gets you moving along swiftly again.

Oh, and when you plant your foot not only does it hustle, it also sounds like a V8 should.

Fuel economy, an important consideration for many potential 750Li owners, not bad - I averaged 12.5L/100km in my week of mainly city driving.

A surprisingly good turning circle makes the big BMW a breeze to drive.

The BMW suspension is extraordinarily good, but the low profile tyres (which are also run-flats) feel a bit firmer than perhaps I would have liked.

These tyres might work nicely on the smooth roads of Germany, but on Sydney’s roads they don’t have the ability to really absorb the cracks and deformations as well as I would like.

This is probably a good time to also mention a slight frustration with the iDrive system (common in all BMW models) and something I have mentioned before - the inability to continuously scroll through a menu list.

For example, when searching for a radio station, you turn the iDrive controller knob and when the list ends, well you just have to reverse direction and scroll back up - most other systems automatically take you back to the top.

A little frustration, true, but one I thought I would mention again.

Lets finish this look at a remarkable car with its biggest party trick - the auto parking function.

I’m proud to say I parked this $319,000 beauty in the driveway, got out, grabbed the remote and shifted the 750Li into the garage while standing outside.

The first time you do it, well I reckon you’ll be like me and have an elevated heart rate! I thought for sure that a mirror would scrape or something would go wrong, but nothing! Phew!

The only issue was that the BMW flagship was actually too long for the garage!

Summing it up, what a wonderful piece of German engineering.

The 2017 BMW 750Li doesn’t want for anything and that delicious V8 up front is the icing on the cake.
