2016 Suzuki Vitara RT-X Diesel Review

We road test and review the diesel Suzuki Vitara RT-X

It’s my second week in the Suzuki Vitara checking out the diesel version of the 2016 Suzuki Vitara RT-X.

The RT-X comes with Suzuki’s Allgrip AWD, diff lock and hill descent control complete with selections for snow and sports mode.

But it was the drivability around town that we’re more interested in and the RT-X diesel is a competent performer.

Being a diesel, consumption is very economical, delivering a very efficient at 5.3L/100km out of the 47 litre tank and providing a lengthy 845km range.

After getting off to a slow start, the 320Nm from the diesel engine kicks in early at 1750rpm giving you plenty of leverage once it picks up momentum.

The rest of the ride is satisfactory (comfort, handling, braking) but maybe even noisier than the petrol engine though not unbearable and tends to hold the gears too long.

My only real grievance would probably be its performance at slow speed whether forward or reverse. Not as smooth as it could be, the Vitara diesel’s acceleration is a little jagged making hard to control precise movements especially when backing up.

Appearance-wise the RT-X isn’t dissimilar from the RT-S with leather seats on the inside and a grey faux carbon fibre trim on the dash instead of the flat grey.

You of course get the same high performing touch screen with sat nav - a highlight of Suzuki models.

Additional features on top of the base model RT-S include:

  • Keyless entry and push button start
  • Leather seats with suede inserts
  • Parking sensors
  • Rain sensing wipers
  • LED headlights
  • Folding mirrors
  • Polished 17” alloy wheels

The Vitara RT-X is the only model in the range to possess a large dual panoramic sunroof. It’s covered by a cloth blind which is a bit on the flimsy side and lets in quite a lot of light when closed.

Sitting at the top of the range, pricing for the Vitara RT-X diesel starts from $35,990.

The 2016 Suzuki Vitara RT-X Diesel is a great economical option if you’re a fan of the Vitara framework and want some longer legs with other terrain capabilities.

Check out my review of the Suzuki Vitara S Turbo next week.
