2016 Audi RS 3 Road Test and Review.

Want to know why Audi is selling a whole lot of cars in 2016? Just go and test-drive the 2016 Audi RS 3.

It’s been a while since I’ve driven a car for a week and not found anything that I would change about it, the new Audi hot hatch is certainly in that category.

The only thing that you must take into account is that for this excellent vehicle there is a fairly hefty price tag – it starts at $78,900.

There’s only one spec-level and one transmission, if you opt to buy an Audi RS 3 you only have to determine which of the long list of optional extras you want to add. More on that later though.

If you don’t mind parting with that much cash, then I can’t think of a reason why you wouldn’t buy it.

The 2.5 litre turbocharged engine is just delicious. Producing 270kW/465Nm, the power seems endless and when in the sportiest of drive modes the exhaust snaps and crackles and that has to put a smile on any car lovers face.

The seven-speed automatic transmission is as smooth and responsive as they come and the brakes, handling and grip are nothing less than faultless.

As you might expect, when in Dynamic mode the ride is fairly firm, but coupled with a tank-like feel through the chassis, it’s really quite enjoyable.

That’s also where cars like this really shine. Pop the Audi RS 3 over into the regular drive modes and its as comfortable and sedate as any other Audi.

If I could make one small suggestion though I would say that I would prefer to have some sort of visual reminder as to what drive mode that you are in.

This is obviously not really required for the sportiest of modes, you can hear the difference!

It’s also not the roomiest of vehicles, so hauling around a family is not going to be the RS 3’s forte, no surprise!

Boot space is also only reasonably sized and if you are on the taller side you might find yourself bumping your head as you climb aboard (as I did first time around).

Standard features inside the cabin include a push-button ignition (located on the centre console), reverse camera, sat-nav, heated/sports seats, electric park brake, nappa leather and digital radio.

Oh, and check out the very cool ‘hidden’ infotainment screen…

Optional features…scary! These run from the optional aluminium inlays inside the cabin ($260), right through to the ceramic brakes at $8,990.

Along the way there are things like the Bang & Olufsen Sound System (which my test car had and the sound quality is enormous), sunroof and RS performance packs that add things like 19” alloy wheels and carbon-fibre inserts.

There’s no compromise when it comes to safety, it comes with a full five-star ANCAP rating.

But really, what an amazing car the 2016 Audi RS 3 is.

It’s just so much fun, so well-appointed and finished and a tremendous car whether you are banging through a mountain pass or hunting out a parking spot at your supermarket.
