Simon Lai road tests and reviews the 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo +

The Hyundai Veloster is a strange looking car to say the least, or unique, I’ll let you decide.

Akin to a beetle, the 2015 Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo+ has a low set profile and wide stance with a muscular body and a sweeping curved roof finishing at the compact rear.

Not only that but it’s a 4-door hatch, with only three passenger doors (and windows) in total. The rear passengers only have one door on the left-hand side while the driver’s side has a longer coupé style door.

I guess one door is better than having to climb through the front for the two rear passengers. Oh yes, it’s only a four seater – there’s a hard plastic cup holder in middle of the rear bench.

On paper the Hyundai Veloster has the same engine, 1.6 litre turbo (150kW/265Nm), as the Kia pro_cee’d GT (which I love), however, compare the two and Veloster is just missing that little bit extra.

It just doesn’t have the same pick up and acceleration but don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lot of fun and when it gets up to speed at about third gear it opens up.

Changing gears is a breeze and the six-speed clutch is not as touchy as pro_cee’d GT, and the friction point is more definite requiring more precise control.

The gear stick has also more definite gates which is more vague in the Kia and you do have the tendency  to miss shifts.

Because of its low and flat design and low profile tyres, the Veloster handles really well - you feel good contact with the road surface with direct and heavier sports like steering.

Control of the vehicle is enhanced by the alloy sports pedals and powered racing style bucket seats raising the comfort levels.

The instrument cluster is kind of basic tough you do enjoy a touch screen in the centre dash with sat nav, aux inputs and a prominent ignition button at the  bottom of the ’v’, in easy view and reach – a place all start buttons should be located.

The black interior with black plastic trims and silver highlights possess lines that draw the eye to this start button. Overall the dashboard is minimalistic but it’s obvious the features aren’t the focus.

Other featuers include a sunroof, split armrest box, and free standing  door handles that aren’t incorporated into door progressing the  modern design.

My biggest complaint was probably the visibility with the thick C-pillars creating a blind spot. The tailgate also sports a strange configuration with a very small rear window and larger plate of glass which sits practically horizontal over the passenger’s heads.

From the driver’s seat this produces a split window in the rear view mirror.

Below this, the boot is a decent size and is long and deep coming equipped with a cargo net.

It was hard for me to split the Kia pro_cee’d GT and the 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo+. The Kia is more practical and serves as a normal car and also looks like one. The Veloster is the choice for a sportier look and something different and unique. But both are fun and lively, and are value for money for a sporty hatch.
