S 450/S 500 now in production

The big-selling Mercedes-Benz S-Class will welcome two new six-cylinder hybrid variants for the 2018 model year.

Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart tell us the new S 450 and S 500 will come into the range from October and coincide with the arrival of new V12 powered flagship models and a number of new features and technologies.

The petrol/electric models boast an in-line six-cylinder engine with the S 450 bringing 270kW/500Nm and the S 500 delivering 320kW/520Nm.

Both also benefit from a further 250Nm of torque and 16kW of power from a 49‑volt integral starter/alternator.

Mercedes-Benz tell us this enables the duo to boast similar outputs as the superseded V8-powered S 500, but with emission more than 20% lower.

Fuel economy from the two new models is as low as 6.6L/100km.

Other new variants of the S-Class coming online from October also include the V12-powered S 600 (390kW/830Nm), and Mercedes-Maybach S 650 and Mercedes-AMG S 65, both boasting 463kW/1000Nm.

One of the other changes coming for MY18 is the arrival of Magic Body Control.

The system, which is also coming to the new-gen Audi A8, uses the front camera/radar to scan the road ahead and then adjusts the suspension to optimize ride comfort.

As part of the system there’s also a new curve inclination function that helps the car in cornering by tilt the body by up to 2.65 degrees.

Mercedes-Benz tell us this reduces lateral forces on passengers.

All models get an updated version of the COMAND Online infotainment system.

While the rear entertainment system (an option in some models) boasts additional features such as a function that allows passengers in the rear to study the planned route and send points of interest along the route to the head unit for the driver.

Smartphone controlled Remote Parking Assist is also available.
