Opinions are split in the Behind the Wheel office about the 2017 Subaru Impreza.

Podcast/Radio Show hosts Chris and Peter are of the view the Impreza is heavily let down by the lack of power and the underperforming CVT.

Joel on the other hand has the belief “it is one of the best small cars on the market”. And I have a tendency to agree (can’t hurt to side with the boss either).

But workplace politics notwithstanding, I enjoyed the experience in the hatch after my second week of driving.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-L ReviewFollowing on from the 2.0i-S, was the Impreza 2.0i-L, obviously with the same engine and a few less features but just as impressive.

Sure the 2.0 litre engine is a touch underwhelming and slow to accelerate, I don’t dispute that, but it isn’t God awful and is only a small flaw.

If you aren’t a lead foot and drive sensibly, then you won’t even notice the Impreza’s failings and will be instead hailing its strengths.

What you do get is a very solid ride which is quiet and trustworthy. The handling is clean and suspension is soft and really takes in the humps and bumps nicely.

And like I said in my previous review, the drive isn’t everything when considering the improvements to the cabin interior layout and sophisticated contoured dashboard design.

The standout is the new touch screen and HUD interface and its cool graphics and animations, strong colours and broad spectrum of data display.

Small touches like superimposed volume or A/C control images over the main screens ads to that hi-tech feel.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-L ReviewOmitted from the top of the line model are heated and powered leather front seats, an electric sunroof, satellite navigation and most notably Subaru’s Vision Assist safety tech package.

If you can do without these aspects then the $24,690 price tag is a reasonable one.

But don’t fret as you do still get some decent kit including:

  • push button ignition
  • auto start stop
  • electric park brake
  • rear view camera
  • 17” alloy wheels

All in all, the Subaru Impreza is a car I wouldn’t mind having in my garage whether it’s the 2.0i-L or 2.0i-S. Consistently top notch build quality and upgraded modern technology it’s hard not to feel comfortable in this package.
